Porter Robinson & Spitfire
I was a bit surprised at first when I heard Spitfire and The State because I was only expecting electro house but it only makes sense to have dubstep now especially with the huge increase of dubstep listeners in the So Cal community. I do like his personal take on dubstep but I wouldn't say I LOVE it. What I do like about the song, is that there is this slight eerie-ness to part of it which reminded me of a less intense eerie Snarled by Skream. I do like the way he mixes electro house and dubstep into that song too. Honestly, when I hear the song though, I feel like he was holding back while producing it. I'm not saying he should go all intense into the dubstep sound and have it really grimey and glitchy, but if you really listen I swear you can hear that he is holding back on this song. As to how or in what way he is holding back, I don't know. Does anyone else get that feeling when you listen to that song?
As for Unison, that is definitely my favorite song on the album and definitely true to the P.R. sound. 100% in the Bitch caught me by surprise a bit because of the moombacore- I was definitely not expecting that. I was also surprised when I listened to The State. I thought "Wow, electro house just went political!" (Side note: Does anyone remember at TAO a few years back when Armin was doing his 6 hr set for Armin Only on NYE? Remember that video of Obama in the background- that's when Trance went political) I thought that was pretty interesting as well. Does anyone know of any other political electronic songs?
Anyways, I like the album overall and if you haven't heard it you should definitely check it out!!! What I like most is that it's not predictable. I do appreciate how he channeled his musical creativity into these songs. What do you think about it?
You know, the other day, my friend said "I thought electro house was dying and then Porter came along and saved it." I never thought electro house was dying, I think my friend was just not listening to the right music haha but in a sense, he meant that eletro house is in the hands of Porter. He is a talented DJ no doubt and young as well, 18 or 19 ish, so the music Porter makes can truly evolve electro house into a new sound. Only time will tell.
